There are specials galore and a Christmas feast dinner for those of you unable to celebrate with their family.First let’s get to the news. As previously reported here, Oak Tree is expanding and will have two hotels. T.R. Lodging Enterprises, Inc. of Wichita, the owners of Oak Tree Inn, has announced that it will be building a 110 room new Oak Tree Inn that will house both railroaders and commercial transient traffic on the lot south of U.S. 160. The company will also maintain their current hotel of 80 rooms on the north side. The name of the current hotel will be changed from Oak Tree Inn to Green Country Inn.The reason for the expansion?… More railroad traffic.“Last week we had 120 railroaders a day, and I only had 80 rooms available,” said Noah List, Oak Tree Inn/Penny’s Diner manager. “We are transporting a lot of railroaders out of town at the moment to Haysville, Arkansas City, and Wichita”T.R. Lodging signed a contract with BNSF Railroad earlier this year, and one of the stipulations was to provide more lodging.“We have to get this lodging built by November, 2014 or we get penalized,” List said.In the meantime, Penny’s and Oak Tree Inn will continue to settle and operate through the holiday. Contact: Oak Tree Inn at 620-326-8191; Penny’s Diner at 620-326-6700.E-mail them at: wellington@mail.oaktreeinn.com. Christmas dinnerPenny’s Diner, which opened in 1998, will stay put with the building of the new hotel complex.Penny’s Diner never closes… ever. There are no locks on the door.So this Christmas Day, a special dinner will be prepared with turkey and all the fixings.“You will be amazed how many people come out for that,” List said. “During Thanksgiving we served 35 turkey dinners. When you are the only thing open in town during the holiday that happens.” Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
